I could have gone back to listen to all of these, but it turns out I only kept two of them---'Floating over Time' and 'Sing.' Given my limited disk space I take that to mean these were ones I really enjoyed. They don't rely on poop or exploding cats. Don't get me wrong---those are wonderful things, but the very best stories don't rely on them. These in particular seem to have a more pure, decent quality.

I remember both stories fondly. I even remember what I was doing on the day I heard 'Sing'---I was sitting outside my daughters' school waiting---they had to come home early for some reason that day. I think I also listened to 'Sleep Age' at the same time.

Still, the imagery from 'Floating over Time' has stayed with me since I heard it. It was just beautiful, and treated a difficult subject in an original yet respectful way. The scope of the story was magnificent. Even the title is well crafted.

Last year I voted for the story that stayed with me the longest. I see no reason to change my system this year. So my vote goes to 'Floating over Time.'

I think the last three on that list are all deserving of my vote, but for very different reasons. Floating over time for its beautiful lyricism, Sarah's Window for it's palpable mood, and Apologies All Around for its unique premise and layered massages. It's a toss-up.

But, only one of those stories is by an unknown. I'm American: I love to root for the underdog. Apologies All Around is Soesbe's very first published story, and that gives it a tiny edge, and my vote.

Float's got my vote. All 5 are great stories, but FOT was a masterpiece.

I voted, but in spite of Sean Combs, not because of him. Ghoulishly releasing posthumous Biggie album after Biggie album is not the kind of credentials needed to lecture me on how to participate in democracy or to threaten my life.

I was torn between Floating and Apologies. Eventually, I flipped a coin, and went with Floating, but if I could vote for both, I would.

Just wanted to do a little campaigning for my picks, so I dug up some support.

For me it was between Sing and Floating Over Time. I'll never forget Sing, it really created a world for me and was so creative. Floating Over Time was beautiful and deep, but Sing pulled me in more.

I agree with Beth. Sing really did create a world. "I've tried parsnips once or twice, and the high they give is pretty powerful if you're not careful, and everybody knew Mag Tanner weren't careful..." a great story and a great premise...I've always liked to think that everyone is born with a unique song, and the way the songs are perceived and related was just very well communicated with great pacing and economy. Well written and well told, (in a kind of Wiggin's General Store mode).

That left, for me, a better taste than Floating Over Time which, though well done and a good story, was still, bottom line, about an ambivalent suicide.

Thank you Strawman! That is a good way of describing what I have against Floating Over Time.

I pulled a lot more from it than just that. He was an old man wanting to die because he felt there was nothing left to live for, paralleling an ancient being, eons older, wanting to live because she felt, in all her travels, she had only scratched the surface of living. What is worth living for, whether it's 70 years or a 70 billion years, and what is time/why does it matter at all?
Saying it's only about a guy second-guessing suicide is like saying Animal Farm is about some animals who throw out humans and bicker about who should run the place.

It was a fight between Sarah's Window, and Floating Over Time. Sarah's Window won with me because it was simply more entertaining. Floating Over Time had more relevant things to say, but Sarah's Window is something I'm going to remember for a long time.

I wanted to vote for Sing, but the competition was just to great. I like the ideas behind that story more than the story itself. That one will stick with me because of my own experiences, and not the story itself. I suppose this is another reason why I decided on Sarah's window over: It didn't need me to reflect on outside sources in order to enjoy the story more.
