Depicting items from drabbles past

Postby StalinSays on Fri Oct 03, 2008 5:29 pm

Hey guys and gals and genderless amorphous slimes of Drabble Land. I'm working on a hush hush art project as a part of a not too distant future Drabblecast merch push. It will involve some 50 odd small pieces of art, and already includes artwork created for the Mega-Beast competition. With this in mind, comes my query...

Can you guys recall interesting, funny, but not horrifyingly complex, characters, creatures, and noteworthy imagery from our collective drabble past?

I'm composing a list, and hope to rush through before my hush hush deadline. The ideas that sprang to my mind were:
    * A Mer'baby
    * Niner, the talking shotgun
    * Morton, in green lantern garb
    * Srendi Vashtar, ferret god
    * Adam with iron
    * A tapeworm
    * A cackling Jack o' Lantern, a la episode 36, Pumpkin Seeds
    * A friendly narwhal

What else y'all got?

Ep 40- marbles. Like a collection of buttons, marbles, and one cat eye.

The vacuum cleaner cleaning up blood from Trifecta 1.

A mob boss holding a rutabaga.

Black and white animals, of course.

A carny holding a sledgehammer from "Momentum"

A liquified cat on a man's lap from "Eggs"

a Lady eating a cheesecake with a pixie leg sticking out.

Being attacked by waterfowl from ep 66
"I tried taking confession for a while, but everybody kept getting annoyed with me."

The final scene from Floating Over Time would be awesome, although it might be overly complex. An old man in waders standing on the bottom of a lake, reaching out to an angelic girl whose skin bears a vague suggestion of circuit boards. Gorgeous and haunting.

Woodpecker with moonshine.

Teenage zombie posting on MySpace.

I still want to do that video of Sci-Fi High...

That would be excellent, but it wouldn't really fit the format. I feel like that has to be a full blown water-color under glass to do it any justice. Knowing my skill with said paints, no justice would be done at all.

My memory is failing me, what is the woodpecker from?

Digging most of these suggestions tbaker. Don't know if I can pull off a liquefied cat. If I could, after a while I think no one would want to look at it, so it doesn't serve the mystery format.

Have you had any luck emulating watercolor with PhotoShop? I was playing around with the idea the other day, and you can get some really interesting blends using semi-transparent layers and layer effects. (I'm hoping to do a lot more original artwork once I formally ditch the SSDJ. There's so much stuff I've barely touched.)

The woodpecker is from a Bbardle. Never take a pecker from his shine. No never take a pecker from his old moonshine!

Yeah, been to one end of photoshop and back, tried a little of everything, cs 2 and all versions prior. I did some stuff in college with expressive, blended layers, and lots of gradients. One of my fav techniques was using ink on watercolor paper, scanning it in, separating to layers, changing its color artificially and then recombining. As far as how I generally 'paint' though, I don't go as loose as I think a virtual reproduction of water colors would dictate. I like to set down a pencil outline, then color around it, 'burning' and 'dodging' and paint-brushing with blending and layer effect styles as I go.

Ah, so its from a bardle. The lyric escaped me. I'll add that image to my list.

Anybody remember the name of that alien that judged the sentient beings of earth and the universe a few episodes back? Did he have a reasonably detailed description of appearance, or was he completely abstract?

Bleerbo. He had a long snout and a long tail and I think he might have been yellow?

Some more ideas (I guess too many is better than too little):
Tehtix would be cool somehow.

A green jelly packet.

I *heart* mustache

A bag with a dead monkey in it

A sketchy looking octopus with a top hat and cane

Aliens abducting a hillbilly

A cute little black demon hatching from an orange

I still love episode 043 mucho:

Keep your sponge cake, fling your flan, Stick your doughnuts, cream and jam, Leave your custard in its can, And give us all some jelly!

And the very nasty episode 041: Set Another Place at the Table, I’m Bringing My Pimple

All these artwork cues are giving me some very weird dreams, like one of those looney tunes compilations, but instead of cute, pushing the outer limits of strange. Watch out for PDSD flashbacks.

Could still use five more image ideas to meet my number goal. Single subject, relatively simple, any more concepts floating around in people's heads? I recall some hogzilla coverage earlier in the year, I think I'll sneak him in to the queue.

Forgive me if I duplicate-

A man trimming flowers from Ep 82
An apology robot from 76
A boy eating a shark from Ep 40
Cookie monster wanting 5 cookies
A vampire lawyer form 70
Old Clara's gourds from 65
The kid from ep 59

Just a few.

The cockroach man would be fun to draw.

You know... If you compiled the "best of the Drabblecast" and made it a big glossy picture book... Well, I'd buy it, anyway. That would require some serious capital, though.

Bo, I don't know how far along ye are, but the image of the son trying to chase the lightning with his grandad from one of the drabbles was something I always liked.

I know this is an old topic but I can't believe nobody mentioned the poop worm...I'm sure it produced the most.....emotion...reaction? of almost any story on here....
I want to build a robot that looks just like me...acts just like me, and doesn't drink as much beer as me.

Welcome to the forums...... Tim? (Said with scottish accent)

You know, that's a good point. It's my favorite story, too.
I'm thinking it might work well for a pair of shorts.
